two minds big band

two minds big bandDave O'Higgins (right) and Pete Wraight grew up together in Derbyshire, but did not get together in a professional context until 2000 to work with electronic maestro, Matthew Herbert: most notably in the hugely successful Mathew Herbert Big Band.
So the appetite was whetted for Two Minds, the premise of which is both contributors writing independently from the same inspiration source: five simple titles (The Mile, Relativity, Supersonic, New Orleans, Contrafact). The music juxtaposes through written, orchestral and cinematic styles (Wraight), with swinging ensembles and free-wheeling improvisations (O'Higgins). The Two Minds band will be releasing a CD before the festival, so they will be hot news.

Dave is a popular and well known figure on the international jazz scene, having recorded 13 albums as leader with various line-ups. He cut his teeth with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and he has worked with a number of jazz luminaries, including Cleo Laine, Ray Charles, Martin Taylor, Itchy Fingers, Frank Sinatra, Salif Keita, Jimmy Smith, Kyle Eastwood, Jamie Cullum and Stan Tracey, as well as Matthew Herbert.

He has produced two CDs and, in addition to being a regular performer, teaches saxophone, harmony and improvisation at the London Centre for Contemporary Music and also runs a studio which specialises in recording live small jazz ensembles.

Pete is the musical director and arranger for the Matthew Herbert Big Band, a hybrid electronic traditional big band. This band was formed in 2002 and has performed extensively in Europe, including numerous Barbican and Royal Festival
Hall appearances.

In addition, Pete, who performs primarily on trumpet, has completed miscellaneous orchestrations for film and recording, including performances by London Symphony Orchestra and the London Sinfonietta. Subject to availability the band will
include many regular faces from the BBC Big Band, Matthew Herbert Big Band, Ronnie Scott's Allstars, well known band leaders and jazz soloists.
